What Is mNAV?
mNAV (multiple of Net Asset Value) measures how many times a company's stock market capitalization trades above or below the market value of its cryptocurrency holdings. It is the primary valuation metric for digital asset treasury companies.
How to Calculate mNAV
Crypto NAV = Holdings x Current Crypto Price
Basic mNAV = (Stock Price x Shares Outstanding) / Crypto NAV
Diluted mNAV = (Stock Price x Diluted Shares) / Crypto NAV
For example, if a company has a $100B market cap and holds $40B worth of BTC, its mNAV is 2.5x. The stock trades at 2.5 times the value of its Bitcoin.
DATFlow calculates two variants:
- Basic mNAV — uses basic shares outstanding. This is the standard view based on currently issued shares
- Diluted mNAV — uses fully diluted shares (including convertible notes, warrants, and options). This shows the mNAV if all potential shares were exercised, giving a more conservative estimate
Interpreting mNAV
- mNAV > 1.0x — the stock trades at a premium to its crypto holdings. Investors pay more than the underlying BTC is worth, pricing in growth, accumulation strategy, or operational value
- mNAV = 1.0x — the stock is priced at par with its crypto NAV. The market assigns no premium or discount to the treasury strategy
- mNAV < 1.0x — the stock trades at a discount. The market values the company below its crypto holdings, suggesting skepticism about management, debt, or the strategy itself
Why mNAV Matters
Traditional metrics like P/E ratio don't capture the value of a crypto treasury. A company holding BTC may have minimal operating revenue but significant asset appreciation. mNAV provides a cleaner comparison by isolating the market's valuation of the crypto position itself.
Comparing mNAV across holders helps investors identify which companies trade at the richest premiums and which may be undervalued relative to their holdings.
Related: EV/mNAV
While mNAV uses market cap (equity only), EV/mNAV uses enterprise value (equity + debt - cash), giving a fuller picture for companies that issue debt to fund BTC purchases.
